Video settings
Two settings tabs affect video: Settings → Video for how imports are encoded, and Settings → Runner for what Plinken Run does with video.
Settings → Video
Section titled “Settings → Video”Video Encode Defaults
Section titled “Video Encode Defaults”These apply when a video file is imported. They are stored with the project, so every collaborator produces the same editing copy. All imports are re-encoded to all-intra H.264, meaning every frame is a seek point.
| Setting | Options |
|---|---|
| Resolution | 1080p (1920×1080), 720p (1280×720), 4K (3840×2160) |
| Bitrate (Mbps) | the target bitrate of the editing copy |
| Frame Rate (fps) | 24, 25, 30 or 60 |
| Fragment Duration | fixed at one second |
| Codec | H.264 |
| All-intra | on |
Higher resolution and bitrate make scrubbing heavier on slow machines; the original file is kept regardless, so you can always re-import at another setting.
Thumbnails
Section titled “Thumbnails”One JPEG is rendered per fragment and drawn across the video region on the timeline. Thumb width sets how large those thumbnails are. Smaller thumbnails load faster on long clips.
Settings → Runner → Video
Section titled “Settings → Runner → Video”With Plinken Run connected, importing footage, rendering the master and cutting originals run natively with the hardware codecs on your computer. The browser does the same jobs on its own whenever the runner is off; only formats the browser cannot decode or encode, such as ProRes and HEVC on most machines, need the runner.
| Switch | Default | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Use Plinken Run for video | on | Send video jobs to the runner when it is connected. Turn off to keep them in the browser. |
| Runner decodes preview video (experimental) | off | Let the runner decode the monitor preview instead of the browser. |
Below the switches, This runner: lists what the connected runner can do: the codecs it decodes and encodes and whether it has hardware acceleration. See Video with Plinken Run.
Settings → Grid → Timecode
Section titled “Settings → Grid → Timecode”The project frame rate used by the Frames snap mode, frame stepping and the timecode display lives under Settings → Grid, together with the timecode start and end. Set it to match your footage before you cut.
